Quick Start Guide to Becoming an Author

Are you ready to publish your first story? Whether its a new story or something you have already created and want to share further, this is the quick start guide to sharing your work with Wild Languages.

Simply follow the steps below to share you work and get some lovely Wild Language goodies for you and your school in return.

  1. Have a look at some of the wonderful resources here for inspiration for your story.

  1. Allow the students to type their story in a Google document so you can copy and paste into your digital book file.

  2. As you create your story, have the students create some wonderful images to accompany, photograph their creations and save to google drive ready to add to your digital storybook.

  3. Open a set of Google slides and set your page layout to either landscape A5 (2480 x 1754 pixels) or A4 (3508 x 2480 pixels). Having your page in landscape format will provide a better layout when filming your video. Try out our google slides template below to get started:

  1. Add your images and text to the slide deck, along with a front cover slide which introduces the book. You can see an example layout here for the book ‘It Wisnae Me’ It Wisnae Me!.pdf

  2. When creating the book, it is best to keep the images consistently to one side of the slide, this means when filming you can place the students’ video slightly over the image rather than the text, without having to move the video capture box for each slide as it records.

  3. When you have a completed book, download a copy of the slide deck as a pdf document, saving to your Google drive.

  4. Select your recording group of students and give them time to practice reading the story aloud with expression.

  5. When you are ready to record, select a video app which will allow you to have a small video embedded on your record screen, Screencastify is perfect for this. Record with your slide deck on present in the background so you can easily navigate through your book as you read aloud.

  6.  When your video is complete download the .mp4 format

  7. To upload your file to Wild Languages you will need 3 files:

  • The word document of your text (this allows us to create subtitles in multiple languages)

  • The PDF version of your book

  • The .mp4 video file of your recording
